The private castle of Villandry, completed around 1536, is the last of the great Loire Castles, in a Renaissance style with magnificent gardens open on three levels in the picturesque village of Villandry.
It is the work of Jean Le Breton, secretary of state of Francis 1st, who had studied the art of gardens after having been Ambassador in Rome. In the 19th century, the traditional garden was replaced by an English garden.
In 1906, the castle of Villandry was bought by the Spanish Joachim de Carvalho who saved the castle from demolition and created, in full harmony with the renaissance architecture of the monument, the current gardens.
