The Jacquemart André Museum, the fine arts and decorative arts, inaugurated on December 8, 1913 by the President of the Republic Raymond Poincaré, it was originally a mansion turned museum.
Edouard André is a politician and collector of French art, heir to one of the greatest fortunes of the Second Empire, who had served in the personal guard of Napoleon III. Disappointed by politics, he decided to devote himself exclusively to his collections.
In 1872 he bought the Fine Arts Gazette and took over the management of the Central Union of the Arts and Decorative Arts.
Married to Nélie Jacquemart, his youngest eight-year-old, who he married civilly in Paris on June 29, 1881, Ensemble, they methodically constituted their excellent collection of paintings and works of art from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century.
