The castle of Clos Lucé, acquired by Charles VIII on July 02, 1490, will become for 200 years the summer residence of the Kings of France.
In 1515, the Battle of Marignan gives the Duchy of Milan to Francis 1st. The young 20-year-old King, fascinated by Leonardo da Vinci, invited him to settle in France.
Leonardo (painter, Inventor, engineer, scientist, humanist, philosopher, astronomer), at the age of 64, crosses the great Alps to arrive at the castle of Clos Lucé in 1516, accompanied by two disciples and took with him three paintings: The Mona Lisa, St. John the Baptist, St. Anne the Virgin and the Child.
The King make his home at his disposal, as well as a pension of 1000 gold crowns per ayear, and finances his works, asking in exchange only for the pleasure of hearing him converse, which he tasted almost every day.
In 1519, Le Genie died at Clos Luce at the age of 67. It will embody the universalist spirit of the Renaissance. Many authors and historians still consider him, as the most talented person, in the greatest number of different fields.
